As we enter spring, many students are sprucing up their resumes to look for internships and co-ops. From a hiring perspective, here are some common mistakes that I see in the hiring process:
1. Including sensitive information on your resume
Do not include any sensitive information on your resume like your full address or citizenship status. If your resume is misplaced by you or the hiring company, then your information may end up in the wrong hands.
2. Including your profile photo in your resume
Companies and recruiting teams are trained to not “judge a book by its cover”, and are legally held responsible for any type of discrimination. However, as much as we try to counter it, implicit bias still exists. Eliminate the risk of implicit bias and remove any photos of yourself from your resume.

3. Leaving blank space on your resume
Students who are involved in numerous activities such as organizations, research labs, clubs, internships, and co-ops often struggle to fit everything onto their resume, and may leave important experience out. Remember to utilize an easy-to-read font and play with the margins to make space for your qualifications.

4. No thanks?
Regardless of the title or the role, remember that the company scheduled time for you to meet with them. A simple email of appreciation will ensure that your contact information is at the top of their inbox, while also giving a summary of your qualifications.

5. Hello? Where are you?
Following up is one of the most important steps to take as a candidate, and should always be done within a period of 24 hours from when the company reaches out to you. Once you receive a response to your application, be sure to keep the company’s point of contact and follow up on the status of your application, interview, or interview feedback before asking about the next step. This demonstrates project management skills and a sense of initiative, while also keeping you updated and at the front of their mind!

Welcome to Our New Interns!
We’re delighted to introduce three new interns this month—Abhaya Ladalla in Web and Graphic Design, Kaylin Lebo in Content Writing, and Ryan Kartiko in Operations and Content Writing! They have been great additions to the Asian Student Achievement team, and we can’t wait to see what they will accomplish during their time with us!

We asked Abhaya, Kaylin, and Ryan to share why they decided to intern with ASA:
Abhaya Ladalla: I decided to intern with Asian Student Achievement to improve my design skills and explore this field of work.
Kaylin Lebo: I decided to intern with Asian Student Achievement to meld my interest in writing with work in the nonprofit sphere. Though it was the promise of learning grant writing that drew me, in the opportunity to create pieces for my writing portfolio has also been an indispensable bonus.
Ryan Kartiko: I decided to intern with Asian Student Achievement to explore the nonprofit industry with an organization whose mission and values really resonate with me.

I don’t tend to watch a lot of shows nowadays, but I really enjoyed watching Revolutionary Girl Utena. I think that it provides a good deconstruction of the fairytale genre and social roles, and that it’s intriguing in its engagement with pre-existing philosophical discussions and absurdism.
